Math Lesson Plan: Metric Intro
GRADE: 5th / 6th
Aim:
Students will learn basic metric measurement concepts & the metric sentence.
MATERIALS:

Motivation:
Today we’re going to learn about a system used all over the world and a trick to remember the units of measure. Raise your hand if you’ve ever
Aim of the game:
- Fill in the whole shape by shading a specified fraction of
it. The winner is person who shades the final segment and
creates a whole.
How to Play:
1. This game can either be played in pairs with each person
playing against each other or as the teacher verses the
class.
2. Start by drawing a whole circle,
Students follow directions to make five-point stars like the ones on the American flag.
Students create a timeline of the history of the flag, which serves as a quick visual reference point for discussions of history as well as an interactive learning tool.
Tell students that they are going to have a quiz, but they get to vote about whether they take it today or tomorrow. Pass out ballots with three options: Today, Tomorrow and No Preference. Have them vote secretly and collect the ballots.
