Grandparents Day is celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day (in September). On Grandparents Day, people honor and thank their grandparents. Grandparents Day was declared a holiday in the USA by the US congress in 1978. The congressional proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter. The idea of Grandparents Day began in 1970, when Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade (from West Virginia) started a campaign to designate a special day to celebrate grandparents.
