Students roll vehicles down an inclined plane placed at various heights and measure distance traveled. Recorded and graphed data reveals an unexpected data trend (due to friction force). Tell students that they are going to have a quiz, but they get to vote about whether they take it today or tomorrow. Pass out ballots with three options: Today, Tomorrow and No Preference. Have them vote secretly and collect the ballots. Faced with dilemmas such as, how much time an average eighth grade student should spend on homework, students formulate and test their hypotheses using mock statistics and identify sampling techniques that could be used to collect the necessary data. Data, Detectives and Decisions involves students in mathematical problem-solving processes. Faced with the dilemma, ?How much time should the average fifth-grade student spend on homework to make good grades?? |
