Students use an online tool to “carve” a pumpkin. Then they write a story about their pumpkin. In this classroom project, students and the teacher produce a class book through a group-writing activity, focusing on a basic before-during-after sequence of events. In this lesson, students participate in a Directed Listening–Thinking Activity (DLTA), in which they listen to “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe and answer prediction questions at designated stopping points during the reading. In the United States, Halloween is celebrated on October 31. The holiday has its roots in the pre-Christian Celtic festival of Samhain. It was Christianized in the 9th century as “All Hallows’ Eve,” which precedes the Roman Catholic celebration of All Saints’ Day on November 1. The students will create the first story that will go into their books. |
