Classroom Newspaper

Objective: Students will write a subjective critique of a movie they have seen recently. Students will gain experience in making an analysis and expressing their ideas and opinions in a formal setting.

List several popular movie titles on the board. Student volunteers can orally give their opinions of the movies. After a class discussion of movies, each student will critique a movie seen recently for which he or she has a strong like or dislike. The movie review draft will be written according to the template and posted on our class newspaper webpage.
Students will use their computers and the Internet to complete this assignments.

Civil War Causes

Lesson Plan Title: Chapter 12 Manifest Destiny “Texas Independence” Part I
Objectives:
The student will be able to describe the history of the Alamo.
The student will be able to research for basic facts from a Web site.
Required Materials:
Laptop
Website: The Alamo http://www.thealamo.org/
Pencil and paper
Technology Integration:
Students will use their laptops research information from a website to answer specific questions pertaining to the Alamo.
Procedures:
Students will visit the official Web site of the Alamo.
Students will click on and read about The Alamo’s Historic Past. They will then need to return to the main screen and click on Frequently Asked Questions. After reading this information they will answer the following questions about what they learned on a separate piece of paper:
1. What was the original name and purpose of the Alamo?
2. How did the Texans first come to occupy the Alamo during the war for independence?
3. On what day did Santa Anna’s siege of the Alamo begin? When did it end?
4. Were there survivors at the Alamo? How many?
Once they are finished with the questions they will hand in their paper and as a class we will go over the answers to the questions.
Independent Practice:
Students will answer the question 1-4 independently about the history of the Alamo and the battles that took place there.
Closure:
Debrief lesson to review what was learned.

The Alamo Part II

Chapter 12 Manifest Destiny “Texas Independence” (Part II)
Objectives:
The student will be able to research for basic facts from a Web site.
The student will be able to create five trading cards of defenders of the Alamo, using pictures, icons, graphics, and text.
Required Materials:
Laptop
Website: The Alamo http://www.thealamo.org/
Colored pencils
Index cards

Technology Integration:
Students will use their laptops research information from a website to answer specific questions pertaining to the Alamo.

Procedures:
Students will revisit the official Web site of the Alamo. This time they will
click on The Defenders. Each student will choose five of the defenders and make trading cards using index cards about their lives and contributions. On one side they will draw a picture, or create an icon or graphic that represents the person. On the other side of the card they will write facts about their life and their part in the defense of the Alamo. This will enable students to think about the men who chose to give their lives to this cause of freedom.

Independent Practice:
Students will work independently on this assignment.
Closure:
After each student is finished they will share their cards with the rest of the class and discuss the various defenders.

Punnett Squares Virtual Lab

How can Punnett squares help predict the traits of offspring?

PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation is to explore how Punnett squares are used to predict the outcomes of monohybrid genetic crosses.

OBJECTIVES:
1. Construct and analyze Punnett squares for monohybrid genetic crosses given scenarios describing specific Drosophila crosses.
2. Analyze the expected genotypes and phenotypes that result from each cross.

STANDARDS:
4.2.3 Science, 1.1.1, 2.3.1 Tech

PROCEDURES: Students will navigate to the McGraw-Hill Virtual Lab website. http://www.mhhe.com/biosci/genbio/virtual_labs. From there students will find the topic: Punnett Squares, click on it and it will take students to a Virtual Lab. There students will follow the procedures as outlined on the webpage to navigate their way through this lab investigation. There is an online Journal that students will fill out and submit. It also has a table tab that students will use to create their Punnett squares. When students have completed their assignment they can either print it out and submit it or they may e-mail their completed work to the teacher.
