Celebrate Dr. Seuss’ Birthday with a series of fun art activities based on his books. Join us in celebrating the birthday of this special man who has made so many children smile with some fun activities, games and links! The study of common rimes, or word families, is vital to students’ early reading and writing skills. Through the contrast of short-vowel patterns, this lesson supports first- and second-grade students’ use of analogy to apply their knowledge of vowel sounds in reading and spelling new words. The integration of Dr. Seuss rhymes creates an engaging study of onsets and rimes. Students will discover patterns in words, sort words based on their vowel patterns, and apply their knowledge in reading and writing activities. Students will: see themselves as readers in a variety of environments, take and/or collect pictures of themselves reading in a variety of places, develop their use of rhythm and rhyme to write a book modeled on Green Eggs and Ham, help plan the PowerPoint or HyperStudio slide show, share their book and slide show with others. The Cat in the Hat is used as a primer to teach students how to analyze a literary work using the literary tools of plot, theme, characterization, and psychoanalytical criticism. In the first session, students use a plot handout to identify the elements of plot and theme for The Cat in the Hat. Session Two introduces psychoanalytic criticism as students classify the characters from the story, using the Id, Ego, and Superego. Students then develop an argument stating the psychological personality for each character. They gather evidence supporting their arguments by identifying examples of indirect characterization in the text. Finally, students refine their analysis and develop an analytical essay. |
