Summertime

This lesson is one example of how you can implement a read-aloud. Read-aloud activities are a great way to reinforce reading skills at any age. You will engage students in a story, model fluent reading, discuss the themes of the story, and then students will illustrate their ideas in drawings and dioramas.

Create a Class Yearbook

Students

* create a format for the yearbook pages they and their classmates will make.
* create yearbook pages about important memories of the year.
* put the pages together in a yearbook.
* design a cover for the yearbook.

Thinking Ahead to Next Year

Students leave advice for those who will follow in their footsteps, or write informative letters to the teachers who will teach them next year.

Wacky Olympics

Here are some stations that I used for my field day at Allen Avenue Elementary School (K-4). The students and teachers really enjoyed the stations. All children received a ribbon at the beginning of the day, exclaiming: “Everyone is a winner at Allen Ave!”

Choosing a Summer Job

Given two summer job opportunities, the student must determine when each job will earn the same amount and what that amount will be. This will be done by solving systems of equations.
