The Electoral College

Students learn about the Electoral College’s role in the election process. They learn about an election (1876) when the Electoral College played a deciding role in the election. They use a resource to determine which other elections were decided by the Electoral College.

Terms of Office!

Students choose from a list of 100 election-related words and 50+ election cliches. They create a dictionary page for some of those words/terms. (This activity can be completed in small groups; each group might be responsible for adding a specified number of words/terms to the glossary.)

Election Scavenger Hunt

Students hunt through newspapers and other news resources for a list of election-related news, photos, editorials, and more.

If I Were the President

Students compose a brief essay telling what they would do to solve problems in the United States if they were elected president.

After completing the lessons in this unit, students will be able to:

* Give examples to indicate how the franchise was extended in the first half of the 19th century.
* Discuss possible effects of the extension of the franchise on the election of 1828.
* Make a connection between changes in voting participation and the election of 1828.
* Describe regional factors evidenced by the voting results in the election of 1828.
* Analyze campaign materials from 1828.
