Lesson Plans - September

Buggy Diner

Not all insects eat the same foods. Some like to eat the leafy parts of vegetables and some like the roots. Some insects prefer other insects! In this activity students will construct an insect diner and serve food samples to the invited insects.

The Great Bug Hunt

he students will be able to:

1. Label a picture of a bug/insect with the correct name
2. Draw a picture of a bug/insect given only it’s name

Harvest Celebration

Thankful for the Harvest-Talk about how much farmers help us by growing food for us to eat. Let the kids
cut pictures out of their favorite fruits and vegetables and make a collage.
2. Helping Others: This is also a good opportunity to show children how they can help others by collecting
food for a food pantry. Explain to the children that not everyone has enough food to share, so they can help
by bringing canned foods and other non-perishables.

Back to School

While heading back to school after a great summer is not a real “holiday,” it is a great reason to celebrate. Back
to school means that kids are growing up, heading off for new adventures and learning more. Having a back to
school party is a great idea, especially for kids that are going to school for the very first time or moving to a new
school. Throw a Back to School party for your kids and show them how fun school can be.

Insects: Observing a Cricket

The student is expected to make observations using tools including hand lenses, balances, cups, and bowls.
