Units on African-American Culture

Students will be able to: write their definition of what they think culture is, complete a culture chart, and help to complete the culture bulletin board.

Melba Pattillo and Ruby Bridges: Two Heroes of School Integration

“Students will: read about the kids who took part in early school integration efforts in Little Rock, Arkansas, and New Orleans; read recent reflections by two of those former students; role-play an interview with Melba Pattillo, one of nine students who integrated Little Rock High School; read background and look at photos about the integration efforts in Little Rock; and,
put themselves in the shoes of those kids who were pioneers in school integration and write a diary entry one of them might have written after the first week in her new school.”

Is Racism Dead?

Students investigate events surrounding the integration of Little Rock (Arkansas) Central High School and explore racial harmony in their own school. Included: A survey to determine whether racism is dead at your school.

The Black History Rap

Students will

* learn about famous Black Americans in history;
* learn how the rap form compares to other forms of poetic expression;
* write rap lyrics to summarize the life of a famous person in Black History; and,
* perform their raps.

African-American Hall of Fame

Students will develop questions to guide an Internet research project. Students will use print and non-print sources to find the answers to their questions. Students will create and deliver speeches telling why their subjects should be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Students will share their findings in creative museum displays.
