Hubble Telescope

The Hubble telescope has provided us with many amazing images of our universe. There is always debate among scientists, politicians, and others over the money spent on continuing to search the universe with such an expensive telescope. This activity draws your students into that debate and asks them to choose a side and defend it. Debates done well can be a lot of fun, so encourage your students to relax and enjoy each other’s points of view.

Technology and the African American Inventor

1. Students will understand that technological advances are the result of the work done by a diverse group of people, many of whom are African Americans.
2. Students will apply Internet browsing skills to locate information.
3. Students will identify the impact of researched inventions on the world today.

From Peanuts to Peanut Butter

The students will create a collage featuring a major scientist or inventor, the product or product(s) they created and how their creation influenced our society. Use completed collages to formatively assess the students’ knowledge. Meet with each student individually to discuss the elements include in the collage.

Creatively Creating Expository Essays

In groups, students create inventions using common objects such as pipe cleaners that could have been in Fahrenheit 451. Students share how their inventions work, then draft expository essays explaining their purpose or how they were built.

Students locate, comprehend, interpret, evaluate, maintain, and apply information, concepts, and ideas found in literature, the arts, symbols, recordings, video and other graphic displays, and computer files in order to perform tasks and/or for enjoyment.
