The Space Shuttle

Students will understand the following:
1. From April 1981 through January 1986, 25 space shuttle missions were conducted.
2. During the 25th launch, the space shuttle exploded, destroying the orbiter Challengerand killing its crew of seven.
3. The accident had a far-reaching impact on the space shuttle program, suspending launchings for more than two years, while both NASA and a presidential commission investigated the accident.

People And Space

Students will understand the following:
1. For preservation of food and space-saving storage, astronauts on space missions eat dehydrated foods.
2. Dehydration means “removal of water.”
3. Dehydrated foods can be consumed by mixing the food with saliva from the eater’s mouth or by adding water.

Government

Declaration of Independence & U.S. Constitution – Bill of Rights
Understanding
Review the history of the Declaration of Independence & Constitution.
Understand citizens’ rights by researching the Constitution’s “Bill of Rights.”
Understand the democratic process.

4th of July Art Project

Students should have previous knowledge of this holiday and what the fireworks display. A book or videotape of a firework display might be a good lead-in to this lesson.

Exploring the Ocean

Students will become familiar with ocean life and learn to recognize different sea creatures.
