Earthquake Experiment #1

If you are outside during an earthquake, it’s important to get away from buildings, overpasses and power lines. Try this experiment to see why.

The Earth Bowl

Scientists know that the earth is made of four layers: the inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust. See “Ideas for Discussion,” #1. The Earth Bowl is a three dimensional, edible representation of the earth in cross section

Dynamic Earth

Students will understand the following:
1. A tidal wave, or tsunami , is a huge, destructive wave caused by a certain type of earthquake.

Killer Quake!

To gain experience with the thinking process involved in constructing an earthquake-proof building.

The Three Little Pigs in Earthquake Land

Students will

* listen to “The Three Little Pigs” and discuss the importance of having strong and sturdy buildings;
* view pictures of an earthquake fault and volcanoes, and discuss these two types of natural disasters;
* listen to earthquake safety recommendations; and
* draw pictures or write letters telling the three little pigs how to prepare their homes and themselves for an earthquake.
