Under the Deep Blue Sea

Students will learn about the ocean and the creatures that live there, listen to stories and poems with oceanic settings, conduct research about oceanic life forms, and write their own stories and poems about the sea.

This lesson explores figurative language comparisons formally known as simile and metaphor; however, the focus of the lesson is on exploring the ways that authors use words rather than on the official terminology for language use.

Into the Ocean

Students are familiar with fish and perhaps some other underwater animals, but have they ever thought about where in the ocean these animals live? In this lesson, students will be encouraged to learn more about the special adaptations of animals with which they are already familiar. It will introduce students to different ocean depths and to the ways in which animals have adapted to live at different depths. In the process, they will look at the photographs of David Doubilet and think about how photography can help save the oceans.

The ocean’s surface really is just the tip of the iceberg! Oceanographers have found amazing creatures that adapt to drastic underwater conditions.
