Icebreakers 2000: Getting-to-Know-You Activities for the First Days of School

What will you do during those first few days of school? What activities might you do to help you get to know your new students? What activities will help students get to know you and one another?

Ice Breakers

“For an icebreaker to be used with any grade. Throw out a role of toilet paper and tell the students to take as much as they need. (Don’t tell them what it’s for). After everyone has taken some, have them tear the toilet paper at the perforations. For each square of paper in their possession, they have to share one fact about themselves.”

Icebreakers

The kids love it when you remember things about them so I can just read up on them and use my knowledge to talk to them about them and their families.

Getting Acquainted

I ask that the children bring in a small bag of pictures and other small objects that could be part of a “me” collage. These collages are a good springboard for the children to discuss their unique qualities, and at the end of the year, they enjoy seeing how they have changed.

Get to know you bags

I supply a white paper bag for them to fill with five items that will tell the class a little about them. They fill the bags with pictures, magnets, small stuffed toys, medals, past report cards, awards, etc. Throughout the first day each student will share what’s in their bag and why.
