Students will: Read about the kids who took part in early school integration efforts in Little Rock, Arkansas, and New Orleans.
Read recent reflections by two of those former students.
Role-play an interview with Melba Pattillo, one of nine students who integrated Little Rock High School.
Read background and look at photos about the integration efforts in Little Rock.
Put themselves in the shoes of those kids who were pioneers in school integration and write a diary entry one of them might have written after the first week in her new school.
Students will learn about African American leaders in United States history. How have African Americans impacted our society?
1. Students will be able to identify famous people and events of the Civil War era.
2. Students will be able to identify hardships Tubman encountered by giving an explanation of what they would do in a similar situation.
3. Students will be able to list as a group 2 positive and 2 negatives effects of slavery.
4. Students will be able to create a time line with 10 historical events that occurred during Tubman’s lifetime.
5. Students will be able to correctly answer 6 of 8 questions about other famous people during the time of Harriet Tubman.
6. Students will be able to create 2 different “routes to freedom” and identify the approximate distances and time for each route.
7. Students will explain in writing, 3 historical facts about Harriet Tubman.
Students will be able to: write their definition of what they think culture is, complete a culture chart, and help to complete the culture bulletin board.
