Improving Elections in the United States

This lesson plan is designed to be used with the film, Election Day, which shows the experiences of a number of people in various parts of the United States on Election Day 2004.

Election Day

• Students will be able to explain the history and significance of Election Day.

• Students will express their opinion about the importance of voting.

Political Polls

Many view polls as either magical predictions or sinister voodoo. Neither is accurate. Polls are merely a source of information.

Know Your Local Government

The purpose of this activity is to introduce students to the local government structure and the people in the various power positions. They will see day to day activities that directly affects their lives, and ways people can influence the actions of these people in power. Where they can see day to day progress or activities on behalf of this level of government that affects their lives.

Students graph the presidents’ ages at inauguration. Who was the youngest president? the oldest?
