Classroom Mascots

An insect unit isn’t complete without live insects in the classroom. Many students like to bring insects for ’show and tell.’ While some insects are very hard to keep alive for more than a few days, others can be maintained for much longer periods of time. There are some guidelines in both cases that this publication will attempt to address.

Choose an Insect

By doing research on a certain insect, students can understand a little more about classification, food chains, interactions between organisms in their environment, characteristics of organisms, lifecycles of organisms, structure and function in living systems, to name a few.

Can You Identify Arthropods?

The student will draw two examples of each of the Arthropod classes on index cards. In pairs, students will play the game “Go Fish”, using their index cards.

Unknown Soldier Diorama

Honor Unknown Soldiers with a memorial. Make a replica of a landmark tomb or design an original structure.

Veteran’s Day, a Chance to Honor Those Who Served Our Country

# The students will be able to understand that many of the liberties we enjoy in America today were earned by the patriotism shown by veterans.
# The students will recognize some of the symbols, songs and pledges that represent our country and which have a very special significance to veterans.
